Guide to Subject Guides - subject guide template (OLD)

Feel free to use this guide to create a subject guide using the side-navigation layout.

Tip: Broaden your search when looking for books

Remember that books tend to be about broader subjects.
If you have trouble finding books that relate to your topic, try broadening your search terms.

Ex: if <sophomores> doesn't give you relevant results, try <undergraduates> or <college students>.

Encyclopedias are good for background research on your topic

Encyclopedias give you short articles (3-5 pages) that provide a big-picture view of important aspects of your topic.

Subject headings are given to a book based on the topic it is about, not just the words that appear in its title or table of contents.  Because they are assigned by a person (not a computer) sometimes they can be a more helpful way to locate books on a specific topic.
