This October, DVC will celebrate Disability Pride with a series of events co-hosted by DVC's Disability Support Services Department and the San Ramon Campus Library.

Nate Tilton, DVC Alum (2018) and Lab Manager of the UC Berkeley Disability Lab aka the “RadMad Lab,” will give a presentation plus show-and-tell about the lab’s innovative design work which finds low-cost technology solutions for people with disabilities and has been featured on the PBS Newshour.

Crip Camp is a documentary about Camp Jened, a summer camp for teens with disabilities that inspired the radical disability rights movement and its fight for historic legislation changes. Produced by the Obamas, it features archival footage from Camp Jened in the 1960s and the 1977 504 Sit-in protest, in which disability rights activists occupied the SF federal building for 26 days.

Join us for a discussion followed by Q&A with Jim LeBrecht, co-director of Crip Camp. LeBrecht was a camper at Camp Jened and is currently a filmmaker, sound designer, and disability rights activist who lives in Oakland.

We’ll be discussing the NY Times bestselling novel, True Biz by Sara Novic. True Biz is a coming-of-age novel that follows a year in the life of a teacher and her students at the River Valley School for the Deaf. The library has a limited number of print copies to loan as well as 2 ebook copies you can start reading now!

We’re pleased to welcome speaker Temple Grandin who is a prominent author and advocate for both autism and animal rights. Her numerous books include Thinking in Pictures, The Autistic Brain and most recently, Visual Thinking, which is available to borrow from the SRC Library. Her story was dramatized in Temple Grandin, a 2010 biopic starring Claire Danes.
